COPYCAT (1995)

There's a new serial killer in town.  Except that's he's the same as the old serial killers.  Say wut?  That's right, it's a copycat!  Meow.  After respected criminal psychologist Sigourney Weaver falls victim to a failed attack by a deranged murderer she goes into seclusion (and he goes to prison), but the appearance of this new killer and the cop's complete failure of an investigation cause her to reach out to help.  But it's gonna be a challenge cause he's definitely done his homework.

COPYCAT kinda fell into obscurity compared to other serial killer movies of the 90's THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, NATURAL BORN KILLERS, SEVEN, but it's still a good film.  It might not have the same unique flair that those films, but with an impressive cast, fast pace, serial killer references,  Holly Hunter looking cute, nostalgic 90's technology, a fun story and a hacked internet address I enjoyed it.  I am sad that we never got to get a good look at Sigourney's squirrel cover though.

THE EDGE (1997)

Anthony Hopkins is a billionaire who surrounds himself with a bunch of cackling, selfish assholes.  While on a vacation with these tools to the frozen depths of Alaska he and Alec Baldwin end up in a plane crash and stranded a million miles from nowhere with no food and nothing but the clothes on their backs.  Oh yeah, there's also a huge man eating bear stalking them!  So now it's not just man vs. the elements and man vs. animals, but also man vs. man because some bad blood between these two comes bubbling to the surface.

THE EDGE isn't any kind of life changing film, but as far as late night flipping the channels and it comes on, it's a blast!  Nice pace, dated effects, awesome bear, good story, violence, beautiful scenery, good acting, solid direction.  I've seen it a few times now and always enjoy it.  Recommended.

OVERBOARD (1987)

Dirt poor carpenter Kurt Russell is hired by super rich Goldie Hawn to do some work on a closet on her yacht.  The job doesn't go very well and in the end she stiffs him his $600 fee and throws him and his tools overboard.  Russell is really pissed off so later on when Goldie falls off the boat and loses her memory he rushes in and claims to be her husband.  For whatever reason the hospital freely turns her over to him and he then takes her home with the intention of using her as a slave for one month to earn back his $600.  Oh yeah he also rapes her.

Now that might sound like the plot to a dozen different horror movies, but since this was the 80's it's actually a comedy!  Turns out Goldie's real husband is super happy when she turns up missing so he doesn't claim her at the hospital.  That leaves the door open for Kurt to take her home and tell her that his four uneducated cavemen children are hers.  He then tortures her by tricking her into working nonstop around his dump of a house.  As expected a spark appears and they fall in love and knock boots, but since Kurt knows the truth and her previous self would have never given him the time of day I would consider that a case of rape through deception.  Add onto that kidnapping, fraud and a host of other charges and Kurt would probably be spending a long time in jail.

To say enjoying OVERBOARD requires a suspension of disbelief is an understatement, but even so it was just too much for me.  The comedy isn't funny enough, the direction is plain, the story completely unbelievable and those kids brains are gonna be all fucked up.  Hardcore fans of 80's comedies might find the story endearing and funny, but I just found it more depressing than anything.  If you need me I'll be in my room watching GROUNDHOG DAY.
