THE DEAD POOL (1988)

Harry's up to the same old, same old again: getting shot at nonstop, killing people, wrecking cars left and right, going to a funeral attended by Axl Rose and ol' girl from THE VIDEO DEAD, getting chased by a RC car carrying a bomb, getting yet another new partner, visiting his new partner in the hospital, shooting people with a harpoon...you know, the regular.  Unfortunately though by the fifth time around Harry's regular is getting pretty stale.  Once again there's a new serial killer in town and once again Harry finds him and kicks his ass...to death.  Along the way he has some minor adventures including romancing a local TV reporter (Patricia Clarkson), verbally sparing with a cranky horror movie director (Liam Neeson) and investigating the drug overdose of a painfully horrible rock star (Jim Carrey) who tortures us with a cheesy lip-synced version of "Welcome to the Jungle" complete with a knockoff Regan (from THE EXORCIST) mannequin.

It's kinda fitting that this fifth and final Dirty Harry movie opened up against the original DIE HARD.  Out with the old and in with the new I guess you could say.  The RC car chase scenes was unbelievable as hell, but still the highlight of an otherwise by-the-numbers movie.  THE DEAD POOL isn't a bad movie, just average.  It would have been nice to see Harry Callahan put out to pasture in something better than this.

Part 1 - Dirty Harry (1971)
Part 2 - Magnum Force (1973)
Part 3 - The Enforcer (1976)
Part 4 - Sudden Impact (1983)

A guy dressed up like Kurt Russell from THE THING wearing a TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE 2 shirt.

SUDDEN IMPACT (1983)

After pissing off (and killing) a whole slew of people at the beginning of the film, Homicide Inspector Harry Callahan is forced to go on vacation...to sunny Hawaii where he teams up with Magnum, T.C., Higgie Baby and...wait, wrong movie.  Harry only goes up the road a bit to some small California town.  But instead of finding peace and quiet the trouble just follows him. Even worse, he gets involved with a vigilante case where somebody's going around shooting dudes in the twig and berries!

Mediocre story that's kinda slow, average acting, car wrecks, lack of pretty San Francisco sights made me sad, creepy bad guy, flashbacks, a cute bulldog, lots of aerial shots.  Out of the first four Dirty Harry films this one is definitely the least exciting.

I can't put my finger on it, but SUDDEN IMPACT just never grabbed my attention.  Barely even worth watching, although the final showdown was exciting.

THE ENFORCER (1976)

Dirty Harry's back at it.  This time, besides the normal ruffians that he has to beat up and/or shoot to death, Harry is on the case of a group of hippy revolutionaries who stole some weapons (machine guns, rocket launchers, etc.) and go on a crime spree.  At the same time, Harry is transferred from Homicide for destroying a store and sent to Personnel.  Comedy hijinks ensue.  Not really, Harry still ends up shooting a bunch of people and even firing off a rocket launcher!

Funky soundtrack, rooftop foot chase, water cannon, Alcatraz shootout, explosions, 70's fashions and cars.  Interesting supporting cast including Bradford Dillman, George Cheung (who gets shot in the balls!), Rudy Ramos, Harry Guardino, Albert Popwell, Tyne Daly and Michael Cavanaugh.

Not as exciting as the second film, but still an good timewaster.
